Dude. Never again!

So I have arrived back in Davis. After a very relaxing, very delicious Thanksgiving break. During which I did my hardest to completely forget that I’m in vet school. There was no studying, no work, no anything. I drove down on Sunday morning (I had a derby parade on Saturday) and spent some time with my husband before we headed down to San Diego on Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving with his dad, sister, and their new puppy, Mia.

Wednesday we went out to celebrate my father-in-law’s birthday. We went to Extraordinary Desserts for dinner and, of course, dessert. It was seriously amazing. I was afraid that a place known for their desserts would have only so-so dinner, but that wasn’t the case. The food was delicious, and the dessert was ridiculously awesome.

Then came Thanksgiving dinner. There were only four of us, but holy crap. It was one of the best meals ever. We had my father-in-law’s special brined turkey, that is always super good. We also had mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes (with cinnamon, brown sugar, milk and butter – YUM), two kinds of stuffing (one of which was corn bread based), gravy, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, canned cranberry sauce (ew), homemade cranberry sauce (um, what?! A-mazing), and crescent rolls. Mountains of food, all made by Scott’s dad and sister. And it was so delicious! Oh, and how could I forget dessert – pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, and the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had. After dinner, I went straight to the couch and immediately fell into a food coma nap. The rest of the day was spent on that couch watching football, snuggling with my husband, and napping on and off. It was pretty much the most perfect Thanksgiving ever. I have a lot to be thankful for…

We left San Diego Friday afternoon, after taking Mia to the dog park and watching her have the best time ever. Saturday night I went out to a skating rink with Tara and then IHOP, and then I left on Sunday. This is where my break turned bad. Very, very, bad.

First, it’s bad enough that break is pretty much over. Also, I’m leaving behind my husband, which breaks my heart every time. So I start down the road at 5pm (a couple hours later than planned, but what can I say? I love my husband!), and it typically takes me 5-5.5 hours to drive from Los Angeles to Davis. I immediately hit post-Thanksgiving traffic. It wasn’t long before I was completely stopped on the freeway. We were stopped so long that I put my car in park and people around me turned their cars OFF. I actually almost ran out of gas once… the gas station was only 8 miles away, but it took me over an HOUR to go that 8 miles. Anyway… the first time I was able to go the speed limit for more than a couple of miles was 90 miles outside of Sacramento. It ended up taking me 8.5 hours to make that drive. Ouch. And I will NEVER AGAIN try to drive back the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. I will fly next year. Because now I am completely exhausted, very grumpy, and have to get up for class in 6 hours. Welcome back from break…

Dear Thanksgiving break,

Get here sooner!!!

This week has gotten off to a pretty crappy start. First I stayed up until 3am Monday morning for the Virology exam, only to do not-so-hot on it. I did really well on the first exam, but since this one was worth twice as many points it really dragged my grade down. He curved, but of course, someone in the class only missed one question the entire quarter, so the curve only amounted to 1.3%. Which did nothing for me. Then because of my 3 hours of sleep and inability to nap, I skipped derby practice. The only place where I get to be the me that is NOT a vet student.

Then today, after completely not paying attention in any of my classes, I hit a classmate on the way out of my parking space. She was traveling down the lane, and I couldn’t see her due to the enormous black truck parked next to me. By the time she hit her horn it was too late and SMACK! There’s a dent and a scratch and her license plate holder went flying… luckily, she’s being super cool about it and just said she would get her holder reattached and let me know how much it cost. Thank god for that.

There are a few other factors making this week obnoxious, and it all combines to make me super grumpy. The only thing that has saved me from jumping off of a bridge is the equine catheterization lab that I had yesterday afternoon. I got to perform a complete physical exam on a horse, then give her an IM, SQ, and IV injection, and then I placed an IV catheter in her jugular vein. So Cool!! I can’t even count how many dog and cat catheters I’ve placed, but it’s WAY different on a horse! Then my partner and I gave her a complete brush down including mane detangling. It was really cathartic to brush her, and she looked amazing when we were finished.

Now I’m sitting here… needing to study for the next exam (Bacteriology and Mycology) and completely and totally lacking the motivation. I just wanna crawl into bed with my kitties and sleep until Sunday, when I leave for a whole week. I think I’ll start studying and drinking at the same time and when I am too drunk to see straight, I’ll trade the studying for the TV.

Six more…

It’s crazy to me that we’re nearing the end of this quarter… my first quarter of second year is almost done. We only have 6 more exams, and 4 of them are finals. We have 5 weeks left, but that includes a four day weekend, an entire week off for Thanksgiving, and a 3 day weekend. So really, it’s only 3 weeks. Whoa. That’s great, but it’s also terrifying, because I really don’t want to start next quarter. Everything I’ve heard about it is that it’s a total nightmare and the absolute worst quarter in all of vet school. This quarter, while kind of boring, hasn’t been too terrible, so I’m not ready to move on to the one that makes everyone suicidal. I’ll pull through, I always do somehow, but I’ll probably be pretty miserable along the way.

Also, I had my first actual roller derby practice last night. I won’t go into detail here (you can read about it at my other blog), but I. Am. Sore. As. F*#k. I woke up this morning and stretched, not feeling sore at all. But it settled in as the day progressed and went from very slight to satisfying to just uncomfortable. I have practice again tomorrow night, and I’m kind of terrified about how I’ll feel on Friday, haha. The good thing is that I can just settle into my couch and study pathology all weekend. And maybe I’ll throw in a hot bath as well. Derby is good for me in so many ways, but right now my muscles just don’t agree!

I suppose it’s time to head to bed now… I should stay up and study pathology more, but there just comes a point when you’re too tired for it to really matter. I’m at that point. Goodnight!
